In the middle of the night after the election, one of our students dashed off an email, panicking about the future of American democracy. But the institutional framework of the United States is firm and resilient. This is unlikely to happen in the United States. The key takeaway from our comparative research is this: There are indeed choppy waters ahead for American democracy. But we are confident that the United States is a strong ship that even an unhinged captain cannot run aground.
